Botanical Overview :
Scientific name: Callistemon viminalis
Common name: Bottle Brush, Crimson Bottlebrush, Red Bottlebrush,
Native to: Queensland and New South Wales, Australia
Height: Typically 5–10 m tall when cultivated and it can be a small tree or it can be in the form of a large shrub.
Leaves: They are simple, alternate, and lanceolate (that is, narrow, spear-shaped), coriaceous (that is, thick & leathery), and young leaves may have a reddish tinge. Also, when young or bruised, leaves emit a lemon-like fragrance (hence “citrinus”).
Flowers in the Bottle Brush
Type: Bisexual flowers borne in dense cylindrical “brush-like” spikes (inflorescences, that is, a group of flowers that grow together) at the ends of branches (or among leaves).
Size: Flower spikes can be several centimeters long (depending on growth). Individual flowers are around 2 - 2.5 cm.
Color: Typically bright red / crimson; other related species may show other colours (occasionally yellow, white, or orange).
Fragrance: Leaves are aromatic (lemon-scented) when crushed; blossoms yield copious nectar that is the scent/flavour of the nectar when traditionally used.
Unique features:
The most distinctive feature is the “bottlebrush” inflorescence, where the stamens are long and showy, forming dense cylindrical spikes, hence giving the plant its common name.

Fruits in the Bottle Brush
Shape & size: Woody, cup-shaped or capsule-like, small, frequently described as woody capsules.
Colour: At maturity, it is generally of woody/brownish colour (typical of woody capsules) rather than being vividly coloured.
Seeds: They contain numerous tiny seeds, and these seeds are very small and many in number per capsule.
Maturation: Capsules can remain on the plant for many months, sometimes only opening to release seeds under special conditions (e.g., tree damage or death), a trait common in related species.
Reaction: Capsules are woody and long-lasting; as they are not fleshy fruit hence not eaten as fruit. Also, this plant relies on seed release via capsule opening rather than fleshy fruit dispersal.
Dispersal: Seeds are tiny and hence released when the woody capsules open; they may be dispersed by wind or rain, though opening can be triggered by environmental stress (common in Myrtaceae).
Pollination
Pollinators: Flowers produce abundant nectar and are visited by a variety of animals, birds (sunbirds/nectar-feeding birds), bees (various species), butterflies, wasps, ants etc.
Pollen types: The showy part of the “flowers” is long stamens, which means pollen is transferred via stamens; also, pollen grains have been studied: which showed that fresh pollen at anthesis shows high viability (~94% viability) and dehisce between 1300–1400 h.

Human Uses in the Bottle Brush
Ornamental use: Widely planted as an ornamental or landscape plant, especially in gardens, parks, avenues, hedges, boundary plants, etc. Also, specimen trees are valued for their vibrant flower spikes and attractive evergreen foliage (all the leaves of a plant or a tree).
Traditional medicine: Various parts (mainly leaves, sometimes flowers) are used in folk/traditional medicine. Reported uses include treatment of respiratory conditions (cough, bronchitis), as expectorant; antimicrobial and antifungal agents; anti-inflammatory; digestive aid; possibly as a natural anthelmintic (for intestinal worms) in some studies.
Craft use: The wood is hard, heavy and tough, and is used for making tool handles, small wooden objects, and decorative items.
Dye: According to some reports, a cinnamon/tan dye can be obtained from the flowers.
